Andre
Davis WR - Virginia Tech - Second Round #37
Speed kills. The selection of Andre Davis continues our theme of selecting playmakers. Whether it's taking it to the house on a reception-- or on a punt return, Davis is exciting whenever he touches the ball. Unlike other track stars that have stepped onto the football field, Davis is a football player that uses his speed to turn ordinary catches into special plays and is dangerous after the catch. In additions to receiving, Davis excels on punt returns, too. He fills a need on spoecial teams, and will contribute as a punt returner right away. Averaging 15.9 per punt return, he also had four career returns for touchdowns.
Last season, Quincy Carter impressed me with the ability to throw the deep ball. Andre Davis gives Quincy Carter a big target and the size at receiver that is missing in the Dallas Cowboys' offense. Davis adjusts well to the deep throws, and the Carter to Davis duo could be lethal for years to come. This selection would allow Ragib "Rocket" Ismail to move into the slot where he can be very effective as well as take some of the pressure off of Joey Galloway.
Virginia Tech wide receiver Andre Davis is also a very smart person. He was a 2001 Scholar-Athlete and won an $18,000 post graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The 6-1, 194-pound receiver from Niskayuna, N.Y., was a Dean's List member and graduated early with a degree in residential property management.
Another receiver I really like is Florida State's Jevon Walker. Also, a tight end, Daniel Graham would be a good fit in the second round. However, I expect both players to be drafted before the #37 selection. Thus, neither was selected. Many are touting receiver Marquise Walker from Michigan as a possible Cowboys second-round selection, but while he may be a terrific possession receiver that would give the 'Boys the presence over the middle, his speed is a big question mark to me. And finally, Jerramy Stevens is an interesting selection-- and a very popular selection in the Mock Drafts entered by visitors to this site. However, with multiple off-the-field incidents, he was given no consideration at this point in the draft. While he has tremendous upside, I don't want to see any draftee with questionable character selected by the Dallas Cowboys. Note that this selection is subject to change as the draft nears and the stock of various players rise or fall.
