Aaron
Kampman - DE - Iowa - #140
Kampman is a selection that will provide depth at defensive end. Ebenezer Ekuban
has been injured and a tease for much of his career, and when he was injured
last season, Peppi Zellner and Demetric Evans where the players the coaching
staff relied on to fill the void. Zellner was called upon in passing down, while
Evans was the choice against the run. Kampman, however, plays the run in addition
to providing a nonstop motor as a pass rusher. A standout at Iowa, the 6' 4"
Kampman was named first-team all-Big Ten in 2001 after leading the conference
with nine sacks. He also led all Big Ten down linemen with 92 tackles, and he
recorded 17 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two interceptions, six pass breakups,
15 quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries.
Also, Kampman won the Forest Evashevski Scholastic Achievement Award this year which keeps with my theme of selecting players with character and intelligence. Even at 280 pounds, he has the frame to get bigger and could be a tackle at some point in the future. Among the qualities that have been mentioned about Kampman is his great effort and tremendous hustle, yet disciplined plays within the Hawkeye system. He plays with leverage and gets after the quarterback, reminding me of a poor man's Charles Haley. Now, if he could be half the player that Haley was-- he would be a fifth-round steal.
