Attention Walmart Shoppers

Post by Hollywood4341 » Thu Mar 16, 2017 12:41 pm

In the early 90's the Dallas Cowboys were built through the draft and key free agent acquisitions. They won 3 Super Bowls and had a great run. They were the Macy's of the NFL and at the top of the heap.

Since then not much to celebrate and in recent years behind the frugal mind of Stephen Jones our franchise has resembled Walmart more than Macy's. Draft and develop and plug holes with low dollar uninspiring players. No more Charles Haley or Deion Sanders splash signings and press conferences. More like players you need to google to see who they are.

This is the new way in Dallas. Some of you like it and some of you don't. But it's here to stay.

There is nothing wrong with Walmart but a good season in this scenario is not hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year, but more like an NFC East Division Title.
That is a better and more realistic goal for a Walmart team. 2007, 2009, 2014, and 2016 all provided the success the Jones build for. Welcome to the Walmart ERA in Dallas.

Building through the draft is the way your core should be built. But teams churn large portions of their roster in 4 year periods due to salary cap and esculating contracts. You simply cannot acquire enough top talent through the draft alone before your players pass their prime or leave for higher dollars. It takes both the draft and free agency. You do not need to break the bank and commit to $60M contracts to be successful in free agency. There are guys every year that sign for reasonable contracts and are solid players.

Poe just signed with Atlanta. The rich get richer.
Now back to reality.
