Dak friendly and Overtaking the Eagles

Dak friendly and Overtaking the Eagles

Well the Super Bowl is over and the Eagles got their first ever Super Bowl, so congrats to them but it is time to take the off season seriously, especially for the fans of the Dallas Cowboys.

As fans we all have our own ideas of what the organization should do whether signing a player, firing a coach, releasing a player, or just doing something different. What we always fail to do is try and evaluate how our current coaching staff and front office perceive players and working the cap. It is never easy and it causes every fan to doubt the validity of sense of it all.

Some fans have coached, some run their own business making tough decisions, some of us are just fans and want to win, although none of us have actually run a franchise in sports with the rules in place they have nor the complexity of the salary cap. So the best we can do is to speculate, surmise, and try our best to use logic on what they might do this off season to become “Dak friendly” and to overtake the Eagles.

The words Dak friendly is really not difficult to understand and if you listen to what Doug Pedersen did for the Eagles should be all you need to know. When Foles had to take over for Wentz, you saw how he struggled until Pedersen in the off week went back to see why Foles was so good for Philly a few years back. What Pedersen saw was Foles was comfortable running the RPO (run-pass option) and he was dang good at it. Then what we saw in the playoffs was truly an amazing difference in a QB, much more confident and very relaxed.

If this doesn’t make sense, then understand Dak friendly is making plays that fit what Dak does best, letting him make decisions on plays, playing more aggressive and letting him be in charge. It also means having a WR that can separate, a TE could can run the seam route, and it means having plays where he can use his feet on designed QB runs. It doesn’t mean using the plays that were successful for Romo and design for Romo’s skill set not Dak’s.

The other item is the defense. Defense is suppose to win championships or at least that is what we are told. Let’s see almost 1200 yards of offense in the Super Bowl and basically the only one sack that caused a fumble that might have been the difference for the Eagles although that hail Mary at the end was awful close. Neither defense in the Super Bowl really played great, IMO, good not great. The centers on both teams kept the middle clean.

So what does Dallas need to do?

First things first. We have three signing that need to take place before free agency begins on March 14th. Dallas needs to extent Zack Martin RG for a number of years and most likely be around 7 or 8 years and it will lower the cap number for 2018 that currently stand at around 22 million going into the 2018 new NFL year. Second would be to sign DeMarcus Lawrence DE to a new contract so to not have to franchise him for 2018. This would also help the cap and what could or possibly not be done. The third signing would be L.P. Ladouceur LS. Why him? He is vital to the kicking game and it is one area that will be relatively inexpense.

There is the tender to be placed on David Irving DT and as fans debates on what that should be. Frankly Irving is a unique talent and hope he stays but there are red flags and it will be interesting to see how the Cowboys view those flags.

In all Dallas have some 16 free agents before the release of any other players. We could see them bring back Jonathan Cooper OG, Kyle Wilber LB, Keith Smith FB, Joe Looney OG, Brian Price DT, and Justin March LB on smaller type contracts including vet minimum contacts. There is also Anthony Hitchens LB. The question on Hitch is going to be money and how much a team will offer him where the Cowboys don’t even come close. Have to wonder if the Colts are going to make the offer we cannot match especially with their new DC. In fact we may have to worry about Irving getting a contract from them also leaving us with just a 2nd round pick albeit the 36th pick in the draft.

Once we take care of our own, at least the ones we can, where does that leave us in terms of free agency and especially with how over the last couple of years we have approached free agency. Will we change how we go after players? Believe we will see that change especially from an offensive perspective. Swing tackle is a huge hole right now and any decent O line is going to be targeted by every team. Frankly, Dallas may have to over spend a bit to get one. Cameron Fleming would be my target as the belief is that New England will not be able to resign him with the others they need to resign.

Why Fleming? Just look at the Super Bowl and where the pressures of Brady came from and you see the point. Fleming name wasn’t called and that is a really good thing. He is a more than serviceable back at both OT spots something Dallas does not have.

Second if free agency needs to be a receiver with speed and the ability to catch the ball that does appear to be a problem sometimes. There are a number of good to great wide receivers in may make it to free agency. Allen Robinson would be a good choice even though he is coming off an ACL injury. Great hands, very good speed and knows how to separate. Would he be the number one guy in Dallas, maybe, just don’t get your hopes up about Dez leaving, it just isn’t going to happen, at least not this year.

Dallas spending money on those two guys goes a long way to improving the offense as Dak friendly and shoring up the offensive line depth. There are other guys that we will sign in the later part of free agency that will help and maybe one or two will make an impact, just don’t go frenzy with what any of them can do.

The Cowboys will still build from the draft. It remains one of the most entertaining spectacles and heart wrenching part of a team for any fan. The draft has always been a crap shoot. More than fifty percent of the guys drafted never make the impact we hope when they are drafted, in fact some years fifty percent is generous. Every fan has the reason why a guy will be there when it is Dallas’ turn to draft but the reality is only Cleveland will know who will be there when they draft number one this year, everything pick after that one will be a different story. And to who a team will or will not pick is nothing better than a coin flip at best. So how will Dallas rate their board and who might they pick?

That pick at 19 is a subject of controversy and always will be. I do see a number of quarterbacks and offensive tackles going prior to the 19th pick. My reasoning is there are approximately 16 teams that either need a starting QB and at least 9 teams that need immediate help on the offensive line. Teams will get antsy and trade up like Arizona and Buffalo. Other teams will reach on an offensive tackle as the draft is not the greatest this year and still other teams will take the best player available as it fits their need as say Chicago taking a WR regardless of what everyone else perceives as the best player available.

So Dallas, where should they go? I believe they are going to change things up this year and if Vita Vea DT is available, then they take the one tech that actually could be the Aaron Donald of this draft. Yep I see them doing what none of us suspect. Is he Dak friendly? Well if you mean stopping the run and disrupting the backfield so Dak has more chances, yes, yes he is. Now I do believe Dallas will take an OG, a LB or two, a safety/corner, an OT, a WR and possibly a TE in the draft but who or when or via a trade is just another mock and we all know how much they are worth.

The questions are endless until each signing, each release, or each pick is made this off season so for the next 79 days, we wait, we watch, we dream, we hope, and we make predictions for Dallas in 2018. Here dreaming it is all good news.

Still hard for me to believe Dallas will actually take a 1 tech in the first although if Vea is there, he may be to hard to pass on.
