SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jason Garrett was in contact with DeMarco Murray as the running back flew to Philadelphia earlier this month. He texted him once he landed. Then came the news. Murray informed Garrett that he was about to sign with the Eagles.
“DeMarco is a great football player and a great young man,’’ Garrett said in his first comments since losing the NFL’s leading rusher. “What he was able to do for our ballclub last year was phenomenal. He had a huge impact on the success that we had.
“We wanted him to be a Cowboy not just for this coming year but for many years to come. But there is a business aspect. He had to do what he felt was right for him and his family, and we had to do what was right for organization.
“Unfortunately that didn’t work out. Now we have to move on and make the next best decision for our team.’’ Garrett was asked if the Cowboys could replace all of those dirty runs he constantly praised Murray for making.“Absolutely,’’ he said. “It has to be replaced. It was a good style of football for us to play. We will try to continue to do that.’’
And what about Murray going to a division rival? “We will play against him a couple of times of year,’’ Garrett said. “That will make it interesting. “Again the level of respect we have for him is really, really high.’’
If it's related to NFL teams other than the Dallas Cowboys, it belongs here.
