Strong Points –

Two year starter. Very athletic with loose hips a quick turn and a burst out of his turn. Can transition very quickly. Has a strong jam and can mirror opponent all over field. Best at press man coverage. Reacts well to ball in air. Hands. Willing run support player who can shed and tackle. Very young, won’t turn 21 until after camp opens.

Weak Points –

Still had two years of eligibility. Don’t see him play much in zone. Not consistently wrap up when he tackles. Can get a bit careless in coverage at times.

Summation –

Eli is a third year sophomore and a two year starter. He is a physical corner who has all the athletic tools needed to excel at the next level. He is tall and long and shows a strong jam at the line of scrimmage. Has the ability to mirror opponent very well in press man. Has excellent body control and transitions very quickly. Reacts very well to the ball and has good hands. He is a willing urn support guy who can tackle but does not consistently wrap up. Because of his age he may start off as a third corner but he will be a starter in short order. Has the physical tools to be an eventual number 1 corner.

"He's a humble kid," notes Brown. "He's a very intelligent kid. He talks about a lot of things other than football. He's interested in a lot of things other than football. But he wants to be the greatest to put on pads, so I'm going to help him get there."

Apple is an explosive, quick-twitch athlete with a sudden closing burst, especially when receivers catch the ball in front of him. He possesses that second gear needed to track the ball downfield and he’s fast enough to recover when gets caught out of position. Thanks to his fluid hips, he can make the smooth transition when forced to change directions quickly. When he stays under control and keeps his knees bent, is a good tackler in space.

The Buckeyes cornerback can consistently break up passes when in position, as he also has the athleticism to reach around the receiver and disrupt the action without committing the penalty. When he breaks up those passes, more often it is the result of violent hits right as the ball arrives. While not a valid ball thief, he does have the natural hands to reach out and pluck the ball to make the tough interception.

Expert: "Apple possesses several traits for the cornerback position that translate well to the next level with his size, length and athleticism. Apple isn't afraid to be physical and contest at the top of routes, but he's still learning what he can get away with and what will draw flags - desired length for the position, but NFL teams will be forced to live and die with his hands-on contact while he figures it out." -- Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

Ripe for picking: A tenacious defender against both pass and run, Apple's calling card drips with aggression. Apple earned a starting job as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and finished second on the team in passes defended (13) while adding 53 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions. He started all 13 games last season and again was second on the team in passes defended (eight), while collecting 33 tackles, 2.0 TFL and an interception. Apple is willing to take on run blockers, and he amassed over 86 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss in his two years with the Buckeyes. He plays with the attitude that every pass is meant for him and has active, disruptive hands and exceptional straight-line speed, as demonstrated by his 4.34-second 40-yard dash time on handheld watches in Indianapolis (announced electronic time was 4.40).

Frankly: Apple already has an NFL defensive back's attitude, playing aggressively on every down but quickly forgetting the bad plays. He is battle-tested in high profile games (interception vs. Oregon's Marcus Mariota in National Championship game) and looks at home in man and zone coverage.
