Underrated pass rusher Ryan Brown was unable to work out at pro day this week. He continues to recover from foot surgery which took place after the Bulldogs' final regular-season game. He has scheduled a date of April 18 to work out for scouts.

To date, Brown has official visits scheduled with the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.

"He's a humble kid," notes Brown. "He's a very intelligent kid. He talks about a lot of things other than football. He's interested in a lot of things other than football. But he wants to be the greatest to put on pads, so I'm going to help him get there."

He toiled in the shadow of Preston Smith last year, the Bulldogs top pass rusher who was taken in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins in May.

Now Brown is the defensive mainstay, the one offensive coordinators must game plan for.

"He's an explosive guy, long, typical SEC kind of defensive end,'' said University of Southern Mississippi offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey before the Golden Eagles game against Mississippi State last week. "It's one of those things where we're going to have to do a really nice job of executing what we do on offense to try to neutralize him a little bit, wear him down as the game goes. Really great player. Got a lot of respect for him.''

Brown, a business administration major, has excelled academically at State. He was named to the SEC All-Academic team. He also has become the face of the defense. State elected to send him to the SEC's Media Days back in July.

It's these type players that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen has found, diamonds in the rough, and polished them into impressive SEC players. Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott is the best example.

But Brown had a chance to go to UCLA, too, as the Bruins got into the recruiting battle for his services.

Ultimately, Brown chose Mississippi State and Starkville.

Defensive end Ryan Brown -- 6-5 7/8, 278 -- is also nursing an injury (foot) and hopes to work out for teams on April 18. Brown did, however, do the bench press: 23 reps.

Hard worker in classrooms and on the field. Very aware of screen passes developing and covers them up. Two-year starter who was also an active contributor on special teams. Plays with hand up and down. Comes off the ball with decent quickness. Tall with good arm length. Invited to play in East-West Shrine Game.

Brown has the long-levered frame that is often predictive of an edge bending pass rusher, but that is not the case with his play. Brown plays entirely too upright to corner with effectiveness as a rusher and is lacking in play strength necessary to hold his ground against the run.
